Currently,China regards artificial intelligence as a means to accelerate its development as an innovative country and a world power in science and technology. Therefore, the demand for machine learning is continuously growing, and translations of related books are thriving. This translation project was commissioned by a client from the Turing Institute of Technology(TIT Lab). This translation report is based on the E-C translations of excerpts from Grokking Machine Learning,in which Chapter 1,Chapter2,and the first two sections of Chapter 3 are excerpted as the translation material. The material covers an introduction to machine learning, types of machine learning, and an overview of linear regression, which is of some learning value to beginners in machine learning.Based on the analysis of the source text, the translator finds that the original text has the following three features. At the lexical level, there are a large number of interdisciplinary polysemous words, metaphorical idioms, and personal pronouns in the first person.Meanwhile, some information on proper nouns is incomplete, and some technical terms are not clearly defined in the source text.At the syntactic level, the original text contains a large number of passive voices, simple sentences indicating definitions, illustrative sentences used to give examples, and long and complex sentences indicating operational processes. At the textual level, the source text contains a lack of clarity in some operational steps.Based on Karl Bühler’s functional theory of language,Katharina Reiss have classified texts into three main types, including informative texts, expressive texts and operative texts.According to the classification of text types, the source text of this translation practice is classified into informative texts, which focus on the truth and accurate transfer of the original message.Building upon the principles of translating informative texts proposed by both Western and domestic scholars, the translator incorporates the principles of accuracy, logicality, and readability to guide this translation practice, which is in accordance with the specific features of the source text and the requirements of the project. The objective is to explore effective translation techniques for computer science books. In this translation practice,in order to improve the accuracy, logic, and readability of the translation, the translator has adopted the following translation methods and strategies in response to translation difficulties and challenges,in the hope of providing some reference for future translations of the same type of text. For example, guided by the accuracy principle, explicitation of polysemous words, addition of proper nouns, and annotation of technical terms are employed to convey information accurately and completely.Guided by the logicality principle, addition of logical connectives and parentheses, and adjustment of sentence structures are adopted to convey information in a logical manner.Guided by the readability principle, free translation of idioms, conversion of passive voices, omission of personal pronouns, and combination of simple sentences are applied to make the rendering more in line with the reading habits of the target readers. |
