Abstract/Summary:
This translation practice is a prose translation guided by Liu Miqing’s translation aesthetics. The source text of this project,The Chronicle of Guang’an in the Xinhai Period,is excerpted from the prose collection The Chronicle of Guang’an.It tells a series of struggles carried out by the revolutionary heroes of Guang’an for national independence during the Xinhai period and shows the spiritual features and national spirits of Guang’an people. The translation of this text is helpful to publicize the history and culture of the Guang’an and the heroic deeds of the martyrs. While narrating the objective history, various literary means are used in the source text to achieve multiple aesthetic senses. For example, ancient poetry and classical Chinese are rich in the beauty of rhythm;historically specific words and dialects create the formal beauty of words;the environment and character description bring unique artistic conceptions. These aesthetic elements are the aesthetic objects with unique aesthetic values according to Liu Miqing, which are worth considering, interpreting and reproducing for the translator who is the aesthetic subject. Therefore, the theory of translation and aesthetics is chosen as the guiding theory of this translation practice. In this theory, the aesthetic subject is supposed to analyze the aesthetic objects from three perspectives: rhythm, word form and emotional conception.Through the process of aesthetic understanding, aesthetic transformation and aesthetic processing, the goal of aesthetic representation can be achieved. This report consists of five chapters, namely, the introduction, source text analysis, theoretical basis, case study and conclusion. In case study, representative cases are selected for detailed analysis based on four features of the source text.Translation methods like rhetorical devices and deletion are used to represent environmental beauty;methods like transliteration, transliteration plus explanation, liberal translation and conversion between active voice and passive voice are used to represent cultural beauty;methods like extension, division and rhetorical questions are used to represent the emotional beauty;and methods like alliteration and rhyme are used to represent the beauty of national spirit. Conclusions can be drawn finally: the consideration of beauty should be put in the first place in prose translation, and a variety of translation methods should be adopted to achieve the representation of rhythm, word form and emotional conception.
