Foreign etiquette refers to the code of conduct and norms of communication that Chinese people shall observe in the international community, which plays a positive role in establishing a good national image, and it can affect China’s status in the international community. This thesis is a report on the practice of C-E translation of the Foreign Etiquette Training Manual. The original text introduces the basic etiquette requirements and related notes in international communication, and it belongs to learning materials.According to the requirements of the client, this translation project aims to help its employees quickly acquire the bilingual expressions of the knowledge on foreign etiquette, and the translation should be accurate, concise and readable.Based on different functions of the text,Peter Newmark divides the texts into three categories: informative texts, expressive texts and vocative texts.According to Newmark’s Text Typology, the source text in this report is a training manual, professional in content and concise in language, and is a combination of informative texts and vocative texts. On the basis of different text types,Newmark puts forward semantic translation and communicative translation and holds that semantic translation is suitable for expressive texts, while communicative translation is suitable for informative texts and vocative texts.Additionally, communicative translation is reader-centered and pays attention to the reaction of readers, making the translation simpler and easier to read. Therefore, based on the types of the source text, the report discusses a variety of translation methods and translation techniques from the lexical and syntactic dimensions under the guidance of Communicative Translation Theory. At lexical level, addition and omission are mainly used for the translation of the terms and expressions on etiquette;and combination and shift can be used for the translation of the four-character phrases. At syntactic level, combination can be used to translate the parallel phrases and sentences;division and reconstruction can deal with the run-on sentences;and passive voice and the structure “it+be+adj/noun phrase+to do sth” can be used to translate the non-subject sentences. The application of Communicative Translation Theory provides the guidance for the translation of the manuals for etiquette training and proves the feasibility of this theory for practical texts.Under the guidance of Communicative Translation Theory, this report achieves conciseness, smoothness, and readability of the translation, and hopefully,it can provide reference for the translation practice of the same type of texts.
