A Report On E-C Translation Of RTX Omniverse Manual Guided By Skopos Theory

The practice report is based on RTX Omniverse Manual E-C translation task.RTX Omniverse is an image processing software launched by NVIDIA company in 2021.The software uses advanced technology to render images in high fidelity.The manual comprises four parts: software overview,workstation install guide,software kit introduction,and troubleshooting.The source text belongs to English for Science and Technology.In the source text,terminologies proper nouns,and nominalizations frequently occur,and long and passive sentences are largely applied to the source text.According to the client’s request,the main purpose of this translation task is to keep the original style in the target text,and to deliver the information of the source text in an accurate and objective manner.Skopos Theory proposes that the participants in the translation task(the original text author,translator,and target language readers)jointly determine the translation purpose,and the translation purpose determines the translation.Therefore,based on the features analysis of the original text and the requirements of this English-Chinese translation task,the translator chooses Skopos Theory as the guiding theory.The problems encountered in translation practice are solved respectively from the skopos rule,the coherence rule,and the fidelity rule.The report aims to provide translation strategies and methods for the same type of text.Firstly,the translator extracts features of the source text,then translates the source text under the guidance of Skopos Theory.Secondly,the report selects relevant translation cases and points out translation methods and strategies based on the three rules of Skopos Theory.Guided by the skopos rule,the translator adopts free translation,addition,and transference in the translation of terminologies of computer fields,operation processes,and names of RTX products to deliver the information of the source text in a targeted manner;based on the coherence rule,the translator adopts conversion,voice change,and recasting in the translation of nominalizations,long and passive sentences to make the target text more understandable;in the light of fidelity rule,the translator reveals the concealed logic and applies literal translation on terminologies in filmmaking fields.At last,the report summarizes the major findings.The report suggests that the Skopos Theory can better solve the problems in the translation process to deliver the information in the source text properly and smoothly.It provides beneficial translation strategies and methods for the same type of text and helps to further improve the translation quality.
