A Practice Report Based On The E-C Translation Of The Chips And Science Act Of 2022 (Excerpted)

There have still been technical limitations in the semiconductor industry in China and there remains a big gap between domestic chips and international ones,mainly in terms of mainstream high-end technologies.Thanks to the considerable support of the country,the semiconductor industry is flourishing,with tech companies like Huawei Technology Company coming into prominence at home and abroad.This has alarmed western countries,especially the United States.The Chips and Science Act of 2022 by the Biden Administration is aiming to boost the development of of its chip industry.The Act is comprised of three parts,namely the “Chips Act of 2022”,the “Research and Innovation” and the “Supplemental Appropriations to Address Threats to the Supreme Court of the United States”.This paper analyses the first part of the author’s translation practice—Chips and Science Act of 2022 and through exploring the features in the process of translation and their solutions,aims to provide experience on the translation of legal English for future workers to draw on.This thesis consists of four chapters.Chapter One is the introduction,including the description of the background,significance and requirements of the task.Chapter Two introduces the process of the translation project,describing the preparation work before translation,relevant work in the translation process and post-editing.Part three consists of the analysis of the specific problems elaborated with examples.Chapter Five presents the summary,which reflects the shortcomings of this translation practice,hoping to provide reference and enlightenment for other translators.The Act is a typical English legal text,with formal style,professional wording and rigorous expression,and it also has the unique features of bills.By analyzing the problems in the process of translation at lexical,syntactic and textual level,the author of the paper hopes to provide some useful references of translation strategies and methods to translators and make a contribution to perfect our laws in terms of semiconductor industry.
