A Practice Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of Engineering Design Guidelines For Hotels

With the unceasing development of economic globalization,China’s construction industry has gradually been in line with international norms,leading to the rapid change of engineering and construction.In recent years,as many overseas developers and operators have entered the Chinese market and cooperated with Chinese construction companies,there is an obvious soar in the number of joint venture projects.As a result,the translation of engineering design guidelines,important documents for guiding design and construction process throughout a project,is essential to the smooth implementation of an engineering project,which requires translators to have professional knowledge and profound understanding of the original text.Based on the MEP Design Guidelines for XXXX Hotels translated by the author in an English-Chinese translation project of a Shanghai construction consultancy company,this practice report consists of five chapters.Chapter One gives a brief introduction to the background,requirements,and significance of the translation project.Chapter Two elaborates the three phrases of the translation process: preparation,implementation,and proofreading.Chapter Three analyzes the text from four perspectives: genre,vocabulary,syntax,and text structure(especially diagrams).Since the text is formal in language,normative in structure,and objective in expression,it can be classified as pragmatic text for scientific and technical affairs.According to the text features,typical cases are selected to explore the challenges the author encountered in vocabulary and syntax and to study applicable translation methods.At the vocabulary level,the author focuses on the translation of units of measurement,compound words and phrases,abbreviations and terms in tables and charts.At the syntax level,the author applies such translation methods as the shift of passive voice structure,the division of sense groups,the translation of particular structure and the conversion of sentence components.Finally,the author gives a summary of the translation practice to provide reference for the translation of English documents in the related fields.
