Some adolescents are prone to maladaptive emotions or behaviors,and the incidence of negative emotions such as anxiety and depression increases throughout adolescence.Developing positive strategies to address these challenges,such as enhancing an individual’s meaning in life,can help individuals move through this stage of development with relative ease and smoothness.Meaning in life is a key factor in an individual’s psychological well-being,helping them to adapt to stress and frustration,gain a sense of control over their external environment,maintain a love of life and thus a positive attitude towards life,and enjoy finding their own unique sense of meaning and pursuing the realization of their self-worth.Therefore,it is important to pay attention to and enhance junior high school students’ meaning in life,help them establish a correct outlook on life,and reduce negative emotions or behaviors such as depression and self-harm,so as to better protect their healthy development.This study consists of two parts,Study 1 explores how family functioning affects meaning in life.Self-compassion and mental toughness were selected as mediating variables,and a total of 1,705 junior high school students in Jiangsu and Anhui provinces were administered with the Family Functioning Scale,Self-Compassion Scale,Mental Toughness Scale and Meaning in Life Scale to systematically examine the relationship among family functioning,self-compassion,mental toughness,and meaning in life among junior high school students.The relationship between family functioning,self-compassion,mental toughness and meaning in life was systematically examined.The findings are as follows:(1)Middle school students’ family functioning is good,and their self-compassion,resilience,meaning in life are all above average.The family function,self-compassion,resilience and meaning of life of middle school students are different in terms of gender,whether they are the only child,whether they are classroom leaders,grade level,parents’ educational background.(2)Family functioning,self-compassion,resilience,and meaning in life are positively correlated.(3)Self-compassion and resilience partially mediate the relationship between family function and meaning of life,respectively.(4)Self-compassion and resilience play a chain role between family function and meaning of life.In Study 2,the students in the first grade were taken as the research object,and the class group psychological counseling activities with the theme of mental toughness were carried out to explore ways to improve meaning of life of junior middle school students.Among them,the experimental group participated in the activity,and the control group received routine teaching without any treatment.The findings are as follows:Classroom group psychological counselling is effective in enhancing middle school students’ resilience and thus their meaning in life can be improved to a certain extent.
