With the in-depth development of economic globalization and the rapid development of science and technology, economic and technological exchanges between Chinese and foreign enterprises have become increasingly frequent.Accordingly, the number of technical agreements signed between Chinese and foreign enterprises has also increased significantly. These technical agreements are often documented in English, and it is necessary to translate them into Chinese to facilitate Chinese personnel’s understanding of the specific content. On account of the great differences in the logic, thinking and expression habits between English and Chinese languages, the translators need to make necessary shifts between specific modes of expression of the two languages to accurately convey the information contained in the source text. However, how to make flexible shifts is not an easyjob. The object concerned with this report is the English-Chinese bilingual text of Development and Technical Assistance Agreement. The author of this report carried out the translation project adopting Catford’s theory of translation shifts as the guideline, and wrote this report employing this theory again as the perspective to conduct analysis and discussion.Macroscopically, the author first classified the cases of translation shift involved in the translation process into cases of level shits and category shifts;and then the author conducted a detailed study of the embodiment of those cases.Through exploration, the author of this report finds out that: as far as level shifts are concerned, the cases involved in the translation process include the shifts of verbs in terms of tense, and countable nouns in terms of number;as to category shifts, the cases involved include class shifts, structural shifts, and unit shifts. And specifically, class shifts include the shifts among nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, and prepositions;structural shifts include the shifts among the constituents of a group or a clause;and unit shifts include the shifts between groups and clauses.
