According to English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2022),the goal of the English curriculum is to form and develop core competencies through learning English courses.The teaching of English reading is an important way to cultivate students’ core competencies.However,the current English reading teaching still takes the traditional teaching methods with poor teaching effect.KWL+(Know,Want,Learn,Mapping and Summarization)is a student-centered model,which can effectively help students set clear learning objectives,understand and apply learning texts,transfer and innovate knowledge,and finally achieve the training goal of core competencies based on their prior knowledge.To explore the impact of the KWL+ model on students’ English reading test performance and reading strategies,this study conducted one-semester teaching research.Assisted by tests,questionnaires and interviews,the purpose of this study is to intend to clarify the answers to the following two research questions based on the constructivist learning theory and experiential learning theory:1.What is the influence of the KWL+ model on students’ English reading test performance in junior high school?2.What is the influence of the KWL+ model on students’ English reading strategies in junior high school?First of all,the author selected two natural classes with the same level in Grade 7 of a school in Hefei as the experimental class and the control class,with a total of 105 students as the research object.A questionnaire survey and a pre-test were conducted to check the student’s current English reading status quo.Then KWL+ model was carried out in the experimental class,and traditional reading teaching was carried out in the control class.Then SPSS Statistics 25 software was used to analyze the obtained data to explore the impact of the KWL+ on students’ reading test performance and reading strategies.Finally,it studied the students’ evaluation of the application of the KWL+ model in English reading through interviews.Research results turned out that the application of the KWL+ model contributed to students’ reading test performance and the mastery of reading strategies,including meta-cognitive strategies,cognitive strategies and affective strategies.Students were satisfied with the application of the KWL+ model and gave high support and recommendation to it.This paper is an experimental study with deficiencies in the research process,which hopes that it can provide some teaching suggestions for English reading teaching in junior high school.
