A Report On The E-C Translation Of Sports Culture In Latin American History (Excerpt)

Since entering the twenty-first century,China’s relations with Latin America have gained new development.As a symbol of history and culture,sports can provide a new perspective for the presentation of Latin American history.This is a report on E-C translation report of an edited book Sports Culture in Latin American History.The author was commissioned by the Center for Latin-America and Caribbean Studies to translate the introduction,the first and second chapters,with the aim of improving the understanding of the history and culture of sports in Latin America for domestic.Sports Culture in Latin American History is a collection of essays in English that explores the origins of sports activities and the symbols of sport as a political tool,masculinity or feminism and so on in Latin American countries,and it has not yet been translated.On the basis of the translation project,the author has written this report.The author selects the Eco-translatology proposed by Professor Hu Gengshen as the guiding theory,and discusses the difficulties encountered in the translation practice,with emphasis on the translation of culture-specific words.The source text is an informative documentary text,and the translator establishes a termbase and uses the computer-assisted translation software Yun Yike Translator and Tmxmall to retain the overall style while faithfully conveying the information of the original text in clear and concise language.At the same time,the author found that the source text contains a large number of culture-specific words,which makes the translation more difficult.According to Eco-translatology,the process of translation is “the process of translator’s adaptation and to the ecological environment of translation”,which is also the process of translator’s “adaptation” and“selection”.The author divides the culture-specific words in the original text into four categories: linguistic,material,social and spiritual culture-specific words,and analyzes typical cases in linguistic,cultural and communicative dimension.Specifically,for the style of the original text and the vacancy of the lexical meaning on the linguistic dimension,the translator uses literal translation,free translation and amplification to faithfully transmit the information of the original text.For the material,social and spiritual culture-specific words on the cultural dimension,the translator takes interpretation or amplification to illustrate religious allusions and some social customs.For the translation of dialects and slang words on the communicative dimension,the translator looks up the Spanish dictionary and websites then seeks help from professionals to preserve their characteristics for communicative purposes.Under the guidance of Eco-translatology,the author successfully completes the translation practice.Through the translation of the source text and the case study,the author found that the theory of Eco-translatology is suitable for the translation of English culture-specific words.Through this translation and report,the author hopes to improve the understanding of the history and culture of Latin American sports among domestic readers and Latin American researchers,and to provide reference for the translation of English culture-specific words.
