A Report On Chinese-English Translation Of Our Sichuan Dialect

Our Sichuan Dialect is derived from the “Special Planning” section of Sichuan Pictorial,Issue 8,2019.It is all-encompassing,involving a wide range of local language and culture with Sichuan dialect as the carrier.The source text falls into the category of literature of introduction and popularization,which features myriads of culture-loaded words.In light of the above,the author employs Eco-translatology theory to guide the translation practice and accomplishes the Chinese-English translation report on the grounds of it.The theory of Eco-translatology was first proposed by Professor Hu Gengshen in the early 20 th century,its core idea is “translation is adaptation/selection”.The principal translation methods are embodied in the “three-dimensional” transformations of “linguistic dimension”,“cultural dimension” and “communicative dimension”,which mirror and reinforce each other.In terms of linguistic dimension,the author selects translation methods such as omission,conversion of word classes and readjustment of sentence orders by enumerating relevant examples at both lexical and syntactical levels for adaptive selection;As regards cultural dimension,the author chooses literal translation,transliteration with annotation and quotation with interpretation as translation methods for the English translation of culturally loaded words such as Sichuan proverbs and the two-part allegorical sayings,operatic tunes and musical instruments of Sichuan Opera and authentic Sichuan dialects respectively for adaptive selection;With respect to communicative dimension,the author focuses on two aspects of adaptive selection by elucidating the preservation of rhetorical devices such as personification and metaphor of the source text and paraphrase.The author enumerates relevant translation examples in sequence,evaluating and summarizing gains and losses.The fundamental purpose of this translation is to disseminate splendid traditional Chinese culture,especially Sichuan dialect and culture to English readers.Therefore,it is aspired that an increasing number of English readers could experience the striking beauty of Chinese language and culture,especially unique Sichuan dialect and culture,from the English translation of Our Sichuan Dialect.
