The paper is based on eco-translatology,takes culture-loaded words in The Scholars translated by the Yangs as objects of study, and will conduct qualitative analysis on translators' adaptation and selection. To see whether they adapt to source language eco-environments properly, and whether the translated work may survive lastingly in the new eco-environments.And research will also be made to observe whether it is suitable or feasible to apply eco-translatology to the study of the translations of The Scholars or any other literary classics, and to see whether there is any significance of it theoretically and practically.Furthermore, whether some general rules for culture-loaded words translation can be discovered from the perspective of eco-translatology.Analysis shows that the Yangs not only adapt to source language eco-environments quite well, but also adapt to target language and eco-environments successfully. The Scholars translated by them transforms information and style of the source text through appropriate and idiomatic English. The conclusion is as follows:In the stage of adaptation, different translation strategies are adopted within the corresponding framework of the two cultures.Due to the differences in geography, history and social development,China and English-speaking countries formed distinct systems of culture, including ecology, material culture, social culture, religious culture and linguistic culture. Thus, corresponding systems of culture-loaded words come into being. In rendering these terms, different strategies are used by the Yangs.Among them, ecological culture-loaded terms are mainly translated through literal translation, transliteration with annotation, omission, liberal translation;material culture-loaded words through literal translation in combination with explanation, literal translation, liberal translation and omission;social culture-loaded words through omission, liberal translation, literal translation with further explanation, and analogy;religious culture-loaded words are rendered through literal translation, literal translation in combination with liberal translation, liberal translation, analogy;linguistic culture-loaded words are translated through liberal translation, omission, analogy, liberal translation with analogy, literal translation with further explanation. In the stage of selection, both the translation methods and stylistic devices are discussed.Besides, the thesis studies addressing terms, including self-depreciatory terms, honorific speech,etc.,idioms,four-character words,proverbs,two-part allegorical puns and other culture-loaded factors.Concerning the translation methods, they are discussed on three different levels, namely, linguistic level, cultural level and communicative level. In translating, the main methods used are almost the same as in the adaptation stage,i.e.liberal translation, literal translation, omission, analogy, explanation,or the combination of them.
