Since the new century, the effective translation and dissemination of Chinese literature has been a major concern in the translation field. As an important carrier of Chinese literature,Chinese culture-loaded words have unique and rich cultural connotations yet could be easily lost in translation.Hence research on their translation strategies will promote the further development of Chinese literature translation activities.Happy Dreams(《高兴》)is one of Jia Pingwa’s masterpieces. With a rich local flavor, the novel successfully depicts a colorful and painful bottom society.In2017,the English version of Happy Dreams translated by sinologist Nicky Harman won the first place in Amazon Asian Literature and the first in Foreign Translation Literature.I believe that a close study of Harman’s translation of the culture-loaded words in Happy Dreams will be beneficial to the translation and dissemination of Chinese literature.Eco-translatology,put forward by Hu Gengshen in 2001,refers to an approach of studying translation from an ecological perspective, which means that in the process of translation,a translator should make full use of his or her subjectivity to adapt to the translational eco-environment and select the target text according to different translational eco-environments.This paper intends to analyze the translation strategies and methods of various culture-loaded words in Happy Dreams by using a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods.Firstly, from the perspective of the integrity of translation activities, this paper analyzes the translational eco-environment of Happy Dreams affecting the translation of culture-loaded words in it,including the author, the source text, the translator, the target culture, the publishing house, the editor and so on.Secondly,it sorts out the culture-loaded words and their characteristics in Happy Dreams together with their English translations,in order to carry out more systematic and clear research on the translation strategies and methods of culture-loaded words. Finally, this paper does a statistical analysis of different translation strategies and methods adopted by Harman together with case studies to explore the influence of the translational eco-environment on the selection of translation strategies of culture-loaded words in Happy Dreams. Finally, the paper reaches the following conclusion: The translation of culturally-loaded words is vital to the introduction of Chinese literature to the world. The success of Harman’s translation of Jia Pingwa’s Happy Dreams has evidently proved the aptness of the approach of Eco-translatology.If translators give full consideration to the translational eco-environment,make adaptive selections to use various translation strategies flexibly, and adapt the target text to the translational eco-environment,culture-loaded words will be effectively appreciated by foreign readers and thereby Chinese literature will be promoted and the cultural communication achieved.
