Picture book reading is an important part of English learning in primary schools.Under the background of core literacy,English picture book teaching presents new characteristics,among which thinking quality,as one of the core literacy of English subjects,has become an important goal of English picture book teaching.In the teaching of English picture books in primary schools,teachers guide students to interpret picture books from multiple angles,sort out the story context and dig deep into the theme of the text,which is conducive to cultivating students’ thinking ability.Based on the theory of interaction between thinking and language,intelligence theory focusing on thinking structure,Guilford’s intelligence structure theory and critical thinking ability model,this study explores how teachers can cultivate students’ thinking quality through the teaching design and implementation of English picture books in primary schools by using classroom observation,video analysis and teacher interviews.In this study,10 high-quality lessons of English picture books in primary schools are selected,and the classroom teaching of English picture books in primary schools is systematically analyzed by using NVIVO video analysis software,to study how teachers can cultivate students’ thinking quality through classroom problem design and classroom teaching activities.The findings of this study are as follows:(1)In the aspect of cultivating students’ logical thinking quality,in the design of classroom questions,teachers promote the development of students’ logical thinking quality by designing judgment questions and observation classes,and in the implementation of classroom teaching activities,they use more activities such as retelling stories and traveling around pictures to improve students’ logical thinking ability;(2)In the aspect of cultivating students’ critical thinking quality,in the design of classroom questions,teachers promote the development of students’ critical thinking quality by designing explanation questions and elaboration questions,and in the implementation of classroom teaching activities,they use more activities such as making students travel around with pictures(predicting the story),evaluating characters and questioning and discussing the answers to questions to improve students’ critical thinking ability;(3)In terms of creative thinking quality,optimize the design of thinking fluency,flexibility and originality;Skillfully set up an open question chain;use multiple activities such as role-playing and mind mapping to improve students’ creative thinking quality.This study puts forward the following suggestions on the cultivation of students’ thinking quality in English picture book teaching in primary schools:(1)Enlightenment on promoting students’ logical thinking ability: optimizing generalization,judgment,analysis and observation;progressive problem chain logic;effective use of multi-activities such as mind map making;(2)Enlightenment on strengthening the cultivation of students’ critical thinking quality: deepening the design of evaluation,reasoning,explanation and elaboration questions;speculative question chain promotes criticism;reasonable design of multiple activities such as picture tour(predicting story);(3)Enlightenment to promote the development of students’ creative thinking quality:improve the design of thinking fluency,flexibility and originality;open question chain stimulates innovation;actively strengthen role-playing and other diversified activities.
