| Cultural awareness is the understanding of Chinese and foreign cultures and the identifying with good cultures,and it is the cross-cultural cognitive,attitudinal and behavioral orientations that students show in the context of globalization.The cultivation of cultural awareness reflects English teachers’ ability to implement the subject core competences in the classroom,especially in reading teaching,based on the cultural knowledge carried by the discourse,guiding students to explore the meaning and connotation of the text,and helping them to learn and internalize language knowledge and cultural knowledge in various language practice and usage activities.Based on the hierarchical classification of the Activity based approach to English Learning,which is in the General High School English Curriculum Standards(2017 Edition 2020 Revised),this study examines the activities in the reading classrooms of three English teachers in the senior class of X High School in G City,Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.Through a semester of classroom observation and the use of questionnaires and interviews as research instruments,the aim was to explore the following three questions:What is the understanding of the English teachers about the concept of "cultivating cultural awareness in the view of English learning activities" ? Is the design of cultural awareness cultivation in the reading classroom consistent with the ELA concept?What are the main factors that influence English teachers’ design of activities to cultivate students’ cultural awareness in reading classrooms ?The results of the study revealed that: the English teachers of secondary school X in G had a good understanding of the concepts related to cultural awareness cultivation,but they did not know enough about cultural awareness and the goals of cultural awareness cultivation;the activities designed by the three teachers for cultural awareness cultivation were basically in line with the three levels of the ELA concept,but the shortcomings in the design of the activities were mainly in the lack of practical activities and imaginative and creative activities in the transfer of innovation,and in some units,the design of the activities for cultural awareness cultivation was not consistent with the concept of English learning activities.The main factors affecting teachers’ design of cultural awareness activities were the time constraint of teaching and teachers’ lack of methods.Based on the above findings,this study proposes three suggestions to promote the cultivation of cultural awareness in reading classrooms under the ELA activity view: Firstly,teachers should understand the goals of cultural awareness cultivation based on the unit content.Secondly,teachers should implement the goals of cultural awareness cultivation based on classroom activities.Finally,they should adopt various teaching activities to cultivate students’ cultural awareness. |
