Reading is one of the main sources of inputting information and an important way to learn a language.Improving English reading abilities is the focus of foreign language learning.The reading classroom,as the main place for reading teaching,helps students to improve their language abilities.However,some of the reading teaching in northwest area still have the problems of focusing too much on the accumulation of language knowledge and neglecting the active participation of students,which is not conducive to the improvement of students’ reading comprehension ability and the cultivation of reading strategies.The English Curriculum Standards for General High Schools(2017)(Ministry of Education,2018)points out that the concept of Activity-based English Learning(ABEL)aims to the development of core literacy in the English subject,ABEL is the fundamental design form of English classroom teaching,and is also the central way to achieve the curriculum goals.This prepares some direction for senior high school English teachers’ reading teaching,so teaching based on the ABEL has begun to receive widespread attention.Based on Krashen’ s input hypothesis,Bloom’ s taxonomy of educational goals and Dewey’s “learning by doing”,this study applies the content of the ABEL to high school English reading teaching and tries to answer the following two questions:(1)What is the impact of ABEL-based reading teaching on senior high school students’ reading comprehension abilities?(2)What is the impact of ABEL-based reading teaching on reading strategies of senior high school students?To address these two research questions,the study conducted a two-month teaching experiment with 88 students in two parallel classes in the second year of a high school in Lanzhou City.The experimental class was taught based on the concept of ABEL,and the control class received PPP model.This thesis used reading comprehension tests and questionnaire as the main research instruments to study the reading comprehension abilities and reading strategies of the students in the two classes.By analyzing the results of the study,the study found that after two months of experiment,the research led to an improvement of students’ reading comprehension abilities and students’ reading strategies.In conclusion,this study confirmed the validity of teaching based on the ABEL in senior high school English reading teaching,which not only improved students’ reading comprehension abilities but also enabled them to master more reading strategies. |
