This report, based on text typology, discusses the translation principles and methods with the case study of the translation of chapters one to six from the book The Law of Higher Education(Fifth Edition)coauthored by William A.Kaplin and Barbara A.Lee.This project comes from the reference translation of the academic program “Research on Tenure System of American Higher Education from a Cultural Perspective(SCWYGJ22-18)” in 2022.Text typology divides texts into informative texts, expressive texts, and vocative texts.Different types of texts have different characteristics, and translation principles and methods. The source text is an academic work in the field of law, which involves specialized and systematic legal knowledge, including the important development and law sources of higher education, and analysis and suggestions on related issues of higher education laws and regulations,so it can be defined as an informative text that features the purpose of transferring information and paying attention to content. The primary function of informative texts is to provide information and state facts, which requires the translator to use the principle of accuracy to guide translation practice. Therefore, the translator needs to accurately translate terminology in the field of law, clearly convey rhetorical meanings and point out referential relationships, and pay attention to the consistent translation of case quotations and polysemous words. Moreover, the linguistic feature of informative texts is logicality, and the rigorous structure and clear logicality of the source text require accurate logical reproduction in the translation process, that is,the principle of logicality. Therefore, the translator needs to focus on the accurate translation of logical connectors by using a combination of literal translation and free translation, and the exact understanding and translation of long and complex sentences by cutting the long sentence, clarifying the components of the main clause and modifiers, and additional information, and translating and reorganizing the fragmented components. Finally,a readable translated text gives priority to the principle of fluency,so the translator pays attention to the differences between Chinese and English and makes appropriate conversions in the translation such as the shifts of part of speech transformation, passive voice, and sentence order. The purpose of this translation practice is to help the project team of “Research on the Tenure System in American Higher Education from the Cultural Perspective(SCWYGJ22-18)” understand the legal knowledge of American higher education, including the tenure system in the United States, provide the Chinese versions of the first to sixth chapters of the Law of Higher Education(Fifth Edition)for the first time, and produce a new practical example for applying the text typology theory.
