Since the dredging of the river and reopening of the Grand Canal in Yongle of the Ming Dynasty, the history of the Ming Dynasty has become increasingly inseparable from the canal, especially th e Shandong Canal.Canal bandits and thieves are located along the Shandong Canal, including both bandits and thieves in the general legal sense,as well as refugees and insurgents who are believed in traditional Chinese thought to have destroyed the ruling order of the feudal dynasty.Shandong Canal bandits and thieves originated in the special geographical environment and complex social patterns of Shandong Canal Area. The developed water and land transportation created by the geographical environment and the developed market brought by the economic prosperity provide an excellent hotbed for the occurrence of bandits and thieves.Various kinds of canal thieves, mainly composed of refugees, sailors, guards and missions, haunted the Shandong Canal, threatening the navigation safety of grain ships, civilian ships and official ships. The main forms of crime are robbery, snatch and murder, however, due to the unreasonable provisions in the legislation of the Ming Dynasty, there are problems in the application of laws in these cases, and criminals are easy to use these problems to escape prosecution. The problem of canal thieves can be alleviated to some extent under the governance and prevention of the government and the people,However, due to the defects in the legal setup of the Ming Dynasty, the drawbacks in judicial practice and the existence of class contradictions rooted in the feudal dynasty itself, the canal bandits and thieves could not be eradicated. The rise and fall of the Ming Dynasty was also related to these canal bandits and thieves.
