Abstract/Summary:
The author took part in the “2021 Seminar on Movie & TV Media and Brand Management for Developing Countries”(online)organized by the Training Center of Hunan Department of Commerce. The author conducted escort interpreting, lecture consecutive interpreting, and simultaneous interpreting for two weeks. This practice report elaborates on respective difficulties in three types of interpreting. The balance between interpreting and other tasks is difficult to strike for escort interpreting.Changing agenda is also a challenge to the interpreter.Consecutive interpreting live classrooms rely too much on the network and include various topics and speakers. In simultaneous interpreting, obstacles often stem from culture-loaded words, fast speed and conciseness of interpretation.Clarifying different roles of the interpreter and using the “Comprehension,Expression and Adaptation”(CEA)framework proposed by Li Changshuan, the practice report discusses the problems exposed in these three aspects.Comprehensionrelated problems included insufficient comprehension of words, limited background knowledge and ignorance of logic.Expression-related problems contained Europeanized Chinese, unnecessary repetition and abusive use of language fillers.Adaptation-related problems involved being too faithful to the speakers and too close to the sentence structures. In response to these problems, the author has put forward respective coping tactics. In comprehension, tactics including reasonable guessing, consultation and generalization, and sentence segmentation are adopted. In expression, use of idiomatic Chinese, deletion of semantic-repetitive information, and improvement of active listening,note-taking and selfmonitoring are recommended. In adaptation, development of critical thinking, improvement of de-verbalization and enhancement of political sensitivity are included. The author has made serious reflections on this interpreting practice and put forward some suggestions on the current MTI course arrangement. As regard to an absence of urgency in current MTI courses and monotonous interpreting internship forms, suggestions for the setup of virtual simulation classrooms and simulation laboratories at the internship sites are included. The author hopes this report would provide a reference to interpreters who will take on such seminar interpreting and some enlightenments to MTI course re-arrangement in the near future.
