This practice report is based on the author’s experience of being a consecutive interpreter for the 2018 Seminar on Agriculture Development and Agricultural Product Trading for Sierra Leone held by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.The author uses case study as the methodology to explore the causes of her improper pauses and bring up coping strategies of this problem.The author firstly reviews domestic and foreign researches on improper pauses from the perspectives of definitions,categories,causes and coping strategies.Then,the interpreting process is described and it consists of background,preparation,task description and feedback and self-assessment.The major part of this practice report is the analysis of the causes,which include terminology,intensive information,English delivery and psychological factors.Corresponding coping strategies are put forward at the end of the analysis of every cause.By writing this practice,the author intends to review her performance in the interpreting and finds out the causes and coping strategies of improper pauses.Besides,she hopes to provide practical suggestions for trainee interpreters to overcome this problem in their training and improve performance in their interpreting.
