With the deepening of globalization, academic exchanges between countries are becoming more and more frequent, and the demand for academic translation is increasing. As a consequence, the translation and research of academic works play an important role in spreading academic ideas and promoting academic exchanges. This thesis,on the basis of the cohesion theory, analyzes the application of discourse cohesion in translation of academic text, taking the excerpts from Virginia Woolf’s Rooms and the Spaces of Modernity as examples. The differences in the cohesion devices between English and Chinese are also taken into consideration. In order to achieve the fluency and coherence of the target text, three cohesion devices and their specific applications in the translation are analyzed. This academic text has the following characteristics: strict logic, clear context,multi-terminology,professional,large amount of information,a great number of long difficult sentences.Based on these, this paper will study how cohesion theory guides the solution of translation problems of this translation project, and discuss how to recreate textual cohesion and coherence embodied in the original text in the translation from the three dimensions of grammatical cohesion, lexical cohesion and structural cohesion. This thesis holds that, when translating the academic text, the translator should not only accurately convey the information, but also give consideration to the professional language and structural beauty of literary criticism, and ensure the tight structure and rigorous logic of the translation.By mastering the means of cohesion in both English and Chinese texts, the translator can better grasp the structure and connotation of the original text and the translated text, and finally recreate the cohesion and coherence of the original text in the translated text.
