The report takes the E-C translation project of an academic book--Descriptive Translation Studies and Beyond(DTS),as the corpus and records the whole process of the translation.According to Newmark’s Text Typology,the text can be initially identified as an informative text.The translation should try to fit the context logic of the text to ensure the accuracy and completeness of the source language information,smooth cohesion,and coherence in meaning.During translation,the author discovered that addressing cohesion is vital to the translation of the academic text.Therefore,the author recorded the main difficulties and essential points about cohesion.In dealing with cohesive devices,the author establishes the Systematic Functional Linguistic based(SFL-Based)Model on Cohesion by taking Halliday’s cohesion theory as the basis and adopting other scholars’ opinions from home and abroad after sorting out the theories from Systematic Functional Linguistic School.The author summarized the corresponding translation methods and techniques based on the theory,including addition,omission,generalization,explicitation,and word formation.Focusing on the cohesion analysis,the author also noticed the relationship between cohesion and coherence and discussed how to deal with them.It was found that cohesion and coherence are supplementary with each other and coherence is a more complex concept that can be achieved through a series of cohesive devices and the context.At the same time,the author figured out that the translation of cohesive devices could not be addressed separately but rather combined with the context,employing all kinds of translation methods feasibly to achieve the cohesion and readability of the whole text.
