English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2021 Edition)specifically points out that it is necessary to “develop curriculum resources,enrich and expand the channels of English learning” as one of the basic concepts.The school-based curriculum development for English course extends and expands the national curriculum,improves the quality of after-school service and promotes the professional development of English teachers.At present,quantitative researches on school-based curriculum development for English course in China are mostly concentrated in the field of higher education,and there are few existing studies focusing on school-based curriculum development for English course in compulsory education.Therefore,it is particularly important to discuss the current situation of school-based curriculum development for English course in compulsory education and the factors affecting it.At first,this study collates and analyzes the relevant domestic and foreign literature as well as the standards of school-based curriculum development for English course.On the basis of referring to Colin Marsh’s and May Stephen’s frameworks of school-based curriculum development,and drawing lessons from the dimensions of the questionnaire on the current situation of school-based curriculum development for English course in higher education in China compiled by Feng Yuan and Chen Jianlin from China Foreign Language Strategy Research Center of Shanghai International Studies University,this paper constructs a double-layer research framework consisting of the maturity and diversity of school-based curriculum development for English course,and then compiles a questionnaire on the current situation of school-based curriculum development for English course in compulsory education based on the framework,and conducts a questionnaire survey on 215 English teachers in compulsory education in different regions of China.Finally,based on interviews and existing literature,this paper analyzes the current situation of school-based curriculum development for English course in compulsory education and its influencing factors.The findings are as follows:(1)The overall level of school-based curriculum development for English course in compulsory education is medium,but levels of each dimension are different,among which teachers’ participation and curriculum evaluation are poor;(2)The school-based curriculum development for English course in compulsory education is related to many teachers’ individual background factors,and there are significant differences in all dimensions of school-based curriculum development for English course between key schools and ordinary schools;(3)English teachers’ curriculum awareness and English teachers’ curriculum development ability have the most prominent influence on school-based curriculum development for English course in compulsory education.Based on the analysis of main problems and influencing factors in school-based curriculum development for English course,the suggestions are put forward from three aspects.First of all,the concept should be guided by improving teachers’ awareness of school-based teaching and establishing the concept of educating students in English curriculum.Secondly,the foundation should be consolidated with the introduction of characteristic curriculum resources into schools and a joint platform built by multi-subjects from the society.Last but not least,the process should be standardized by the aid of accurate division of functions in development teams and a supervision mechanism for the whole process.
