As a form of creative thinking, insight has two key characteristics: novelty and appropriateness.Breaking old representations and forming novel and effective associations is the key cognitive process of insight problem solving.Previous studies have confirmed the existence of the promoting effect of insight on memory, and explored the mechanism of the dominant effect of insight memory from the perspective of emotional aha experience.Few studies have explored the influence of induced insight on memory from the perspective of novelty, and it is unclear whether it has the same promoting effect on individual items(question, answer)and relationships between items(question and answer relationship)of insight problem solving events, and how lasting its effects are over time.In addition, the influence of novelty on meta – memory also needs to be further explored. Therefore, this study intends to adopt the learning–testing paradigm to explore the influence of novelty on item memory, associative memory and meta–memory in the Epiphany induced by three–word puzzles through three experiments, and investigate the durability of its influence in time.In Experiment 1,it intends to compare the memory effects of high and low novelty level on the immediate test and the delayed test, and to explore the effects of the novelty of induced insight on item memory(answer),meta–memory and persistence. These results showed that the high novelty condition had a higher hit rates,a faster recognition response, and a higher confidence value. Moreover, the memory advantage had a lasting effect, indicating that novelty had a promoting effect on the memory of answers. In Experiment 2,it is based on the same learning test paradigm and anagram task to explore the effect of novelty of induced insight on item memory(question),which differs from Experiment 1 in that the test task is recognition of anagram puzzle. These results showed that the high novelty condition had a lower hit rate and a longer response time in the delayed test, and a higher confidence value in both the high and low novelty condition, which showed the "forgetting" of the conventional semantic of the riddle, and that novelty does not promote the memory of the anagrams. In Experiment 3,the relationship between riddle and answer of riddle was used as the recognition content of associative memory to explore the impact of novelty of induced insight on associative memory(question – answer relationship). The results showed that the recognition rate and confidence of associative memory under high novelty condition were significantly higher than that under low novelty condition, indicating that novelty also promoted the associative memory of answer–question. The conclusions of this study are as follows:(1)the novelty of induced insight can promote and inhibit item memory, which may depend on the content of memory;(2)The novelty of induced insight can promote the association of memory;(3)The novelty of induced insight enhances the meta–memory of answer and answer–question association, and the meta–cognitive bias of question memory is greater;(4)No matter in a single item or in a linked item, the effect of novelty association on memory promotion or inhibition was more obvious on the second day,and the effect of novelty of insight on memory was lasting(at least one day in this study). |
