| Drama in Education(DIE)is a teaching model that integrates the elements of drama to allow students to actively learn and experience in order to facilitate efficient teaching. It can help stride across disciplinary boundaries and provide aesthetic edification and humanistic emotional experience for children. The English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education issued in 2022 proposed that English curriculum should integrate instrumental and humanistic characteristics, fostering virtue through education while developing students’ English subject core competencies.DIE happens to be able to respond to the requirements of the curriculum standards and act as a carrier to practice the activity-based approach in English learning, providing students with real language learning environment and helping them to grow up confidently and healthily in experiential learning. However,DIE has not been frequently used or popularized in junior high school English classes. In addition, most of the existing studies only focus on the impact of DIE on students, with few studies focusing on its current status of implementation and impediments from the perspective of teachers. Therefore, investigating how junior high school English teachers apply DIE in their daily teaching would show great theoretical and pedagogical implications.Firstly, this study constructs a research framework in line with its own research questions by sorting out and analyzing relevant literature on DIE and language teaching at home and abroad. It includes three dimensions: Teacher Attitude,Teaching Behavior and Teaching Effect. Then on the basis of this research framework, the Questionnaire on DIE Applied in Junior High School English Teaching has been drawn up,and 237 in-service junior high School English teachers from different regions of our country have been surveyed. After that, the interview outline is developed based on the research framework and statistical analysis, and 5 teachers with different ages, seniority, experience in activities related to DIE,or highest academic qualification are selected as the interviewees. Finally,an in-depth analysis is presented, according to the data and information collected by questionnaires and interviews,to reveal the current situation, differences and causes of the implementation of DIE by junior high school English teachers. The findings are as follows:(1)DIE can serve as a high-quality teaching method for English subject to respond to the requirements of the curriculum standards and promote the common growth of teachers and students;(2)junior high school English teachers basically have the willingness and capacity to implement DIE in English classes;(3)age,seniority and activity/training experience of teachers are the key factors affecting the implementation of DIE in English teaching;(4)to facilitate the implementation of DIE in English teaching,it is crucial to make up for teachers’ own defects and optimize unfavourable objective conditions.Based on the above, four suggestions are proposed:(1)Optimize the selection of textbook content to increase the proportion of dramatic texts;(2)Improve the assessment system for the implementation of DIE to fulfill the ultimate goal of developing students’ English subject core competencies;(3)Establish a support group for teachers to help each other and create high-quality interdisciplinary courses;(4)Strengthen the theoretical study and practical training of English teachers on DIE and promote their growth in reflection. |
