Secret: The Making of Australia’s Security State is a book of political commentary by the Australian journalist and columnist Brian Toohey. The book reveals confidential conversations between Australian and officials from the former Central Intelligence Agency and the U.S.State Department, including a series of secrets about Australia’s decision-making during the wars it participated in.Brian Toohey is critical of the secrecy held by Australian authorities towards the public and the wars in which Australia has been involved. This translation report includes translation of the Preface, and Chapters 46-51.In the Preface,Toohey shares his views on the current political situation in Australia and the purpose of this book.In Chapters 46-51,Toohey traces the history of Australia’s participation in several wars and expresses a critical attitude towards Australia’s ‘self-initiated’ participation from a series of details he uncovered. This study adopts Nord’s text analysis theory to guide the translation. The author reviews the status of its domestic and international research, and applies translation brief, source text analysis, problem identifications and two translation strategies-documentary translation and instrumental translation of text analysis theory-to translation practice. The author finds that text analysis theory gives a comprehensive analysis of the source text from three aspects: translation brief, source text analysis and problem identifications. After analysis, translation tasks and main problems that need to be solved are clearer. Then,in a targeted manner, documentary translation and instrumental translation can help translators better complete the translation task.
