Learning engagement has a significant impact on teaching quality.Existing research suggests that learning engagement is an essential indicator of educational quality and has a positive effect on students’ academic performance and healthy development.Consequently,it is essential to investigate the factors that promote learning engagement.Although existing research suggests that learning engagement is influenced by various factors such as learning environment and teaching methods, there is still a lack of research on the relationship between specific teaching models and middle school students’ learning engagement. In light of this, this study applies Problem-oriented 5E Model to junior high school reading instruction in order to to explore the impact of this model on students’ learning engagement.According to the theory of learning engagement, learning engagement is generally divided into three dimensions: behavioral engagement, affective engagement, and cognitive engagement.Based on this, combined with the research purpose, this study mainly addresses two questions: 1)In English reading teaching, what are the impacts of Problem-oriented 5E Model on improving junior high school students’ behavioral, affective, and cognitive engagement? 2)In English reading teaching, what are the different impacts of Problem-oriented 5E Model on learning engagement among junior high school students with different English proficiency levels? This study conducted a one-semester English reading instruction experiment in the second grade of a middle school in the Panyu District of Guangzhou in order to address the two questions posed above. In the experimental class, the Problem-oriented 5E Model was utilized, while the PWP instruction model was utilized in the control class. The purpose of the experiment is to explore the impact of Problem-oriented 5E Model on the learning engagement of junior high school pupils. This study derives the following conclusions based on the data analysis of the questionnaire, classroom observation, interview, and teacher oral report: This teaching model has a positive effect on increasing the learning engagement of junior high school students, with the effect on affective engagement being the most significant, followed by behavioral engagement.Second, the learning engagement of students with varying English proficiency levels is affected differently by this teaching model, with a greater impact on middle and low level students.
