Compulsory English Education Curriculum Standards(2022 Edition)make it clear that the English curriculum is tasked with developing pupils’ basic English attainments and developing their thinking abilities(Ministry of Education,2022).The core competence of the English subject is comprised of four areas: language ability,cultural awareness,thinking capacity,and learning ability.The teaching of English reading is the main ground for developing pupils’ thinking qualities.Asking questions as the main teaching method of reading instruction can promote the improvement of thinking quality.However,the design and quality of the questions asked in primary school English story reading classes vary.Primary pupils are adversely affected by this,as it adversely affects their interest in English reading and their ability to acquire reading skills and critical thinking.The question chain model can guide pupils in understanding the text,acquiring knowledge and skills,enhancing their interest in reading and developing their thinking skills through a logical and progressive chain of questions.The question chain approach has been shown to be effective in teaching English reading in secondary schools in China,according to some studies already published.However,relatively scant research has been conducted on the application of the question chain approach to primary school English reading.Therefore,the author’s question chain teaching method is applied to the teaching of English stories in upper primary school.The purpose of this study is to explore whether the Problem-Chain Teaching Model can have a positive impact on the reading interest,reading thinking capacity and reading achievements of senior pupils.The subjects of the experiment are the pupils of Class 1 and Class 2,Grade 5 in Erodes.The author takes Class 1 as an experimental class and uses the Problem-Chain Teaching Model to teach English story reading.In this study,the pretest and posttest,questionnaire and interview are used as research tools to collect data,and data analysis and processing with the help of Excel2007 and SPSS 22.0.The results of the study are as follows:(1)The use of the problem chain model can improve the reading interest of senior pupils.(2)The use of the problem chain model can improve the three qualities of logical,critical,and creative thinking of senior pupils.(3)Senior pupils’ reading achievements also can be improved significantly after using the problem chain teaching model.The above results show that the problem chain teaching model is effective in primary school English story reading,and it can not only improve senior pupils’ reading achievements,but also can improve their thinking quality and reading interest.Thus,the problem chain teaching model is practically significant in reading teaching for the senior pupils in primary school. |
