The Study On The Variant Words Of The Book Of Songs Cited In Bei Tang Shu Chao

Bei Tang Shu Chao was written during the Daye period of Emperor Yangdi of the Sui Dynasty,and is the earliest existing private editing book,with a large number of references to The Book of Songs.The Book of Songs cited in Bei Tang Shu Chao mainly includes scriptures and prefaces,as well as some contents of Mao’s Zhuan and Zheng’s Jian,as well as relevant literature materials such as Han Shi,Shi Wei,and works of scholars from the Han,Wei,and Six Dynasties on The Book of Songs.The style of citing Poetry in Bei Tang Shu Chao is different from that of other types of books in later generations,and has obvious own characteristics.The citations are basically separate quotations from the scriptures,poetic prefaces,Zhuan and Jian.Only a few sentences are written together with the poetic prefaces,and the scriptures are written together with Zhuan,and Jian.Moreover,when quoting,most of them directly extract relevant sentences or words that conform to the categories set forth in Bei Tang Shu Chao,especially the preface to poetry,Mao’s Zhuan,and Zheng’s Jian,with few complete quotes.Comparing the scriptures and poetic prefaces of the Book of Songs cited in the Bei Tang Shu Chao with different versions of The Book of Songs such as the Anhui University Collection of Warring States Bamboo Slips,the Fuyang Han Slips,the Han Shi Jing,the Tang Shi Jing,the Dunhuang manuscript,the towel box edition,the ten line edition,and the Ruan Yuan edition,while referring to the Jing Dian Shi Wen,it is found that most of the sentences of The Book of Songs cited in the Bei Tang Shu Chao do not differ between versions,In some citations,there are phenomena such as ancient and modern characters,interchangeable characters,colloquial characters,variant characters,taboo characters,and copying errors.However,in Bei Tang Shu Chao,there is still a situation where the same poem is quoted differently from the previous one.These circumstances reflect that Yu Shinan may have used multiple different texts when compiling Bei Tang Shu Chao.Through the exegetical interpretation of the existing variant texts,combined with the textual research of The Book of Songs by Qing Confucianism,it is found that the text used in the final version of The Book of Songs in the Tang Dynasty is not entirely correct,so that the text of The Book of Songs circulated after the final version still contains some issues such as adultery,colloquial characters,and inversion of words.However,after the Tang Dynasty,the various texts of The Book of Songs are basically the same and tend to be unified.There are only taboos and common characters used in different eras between the various versions.The documents of The Book of Songs cited in Bei Tang Shu Chao provide a wealth of literature materials for the exegesis of words in The Book of Songs,the determination of correct characters,and the exploration of the evolution of the text.They have an important reference role.
