A Study On The Travel Notes In The Late Qing Dynasty Newspapers

In the late Qing Dynasty,modern newspapers were introduced into China.These publications contain a lot of travel notes.The intense metabolism of the late Qing society was perfectly demonstrated in these works.At the same time,because the domestic travel notes published in the press are in the transition period from classical travel notes to modern travel notes,these works show the characteristics of modern travel notes.As a kind of mass media,newspapers and periodicals also give the characteristics of these travel literature.The three elements of a travel note are travel,landscape and emotion.This paper takes this as a clue to analyze how the travel notes in the late Qing Dynasty reflected the above dual characteristics.The first part analyzes the creative group of travel notes.In the late Qing Dynasty,the atmosphere was gradually fading,the creators of newspapers travel notes were more diverse,and the old and new creative groups were intertwined.The most abundant and remarkable works are the emerging creative groups.A large number of female creators have emerged,and they have fully demonstrated their style and expressed their views in their travel notes.The frustrated literati became professional newspapermen.They gradually assume social responsibility.The group of new knowledge hope to spread new knowledge and enlighten the people with the help of travel notes.New school students publish travel notes in school journals to cultivate their writing ability.Traditional literati,also maintain the vitality of creation,is also an important creative group,still maintain the classical aesthetic charm.The second part analyzes the experience in the journey.The passenger experience of transportation constitutes most of the travel experience.Different means of transport carried different experience.The train is novel and fast,and the author can observe the carriage society and enjoy the infinite scenery;the steam characteristics of the ship are obvious,the volume is huge and the structure is precise.However,both have defects.Although traditional travel is difficult,academic investigation still needed this method,and the author could feel the unique scenery.The third part analyzes the landscape of the tour.In these travel notes,the old and new landscapes are mixed.Companies,factories,exposition,schools,prisons,etc.,new landscapes are largely presented,and contain the author ’s reflection on tradition and expectations for progress.Gardens,temples and landscapes are still the focus of description.But the garden landscape is compatible with Chinese and Western,landscape,temples retain the traditional aesthetic,but also led to the author ’s new thinking.The fourth part analyzes the newspaper characteristics of travel notes.In order to fit the mass media characteristics of newspapers and,these works are more secular in content,recording each expenditure,recording secular anecdotes,and having the nature of advertising.In the form of more popular,the vernacular travel notes emerged.Classical Chinese travel notes became luminous.The Western punctuations were used.These changes were more suitable for public readers’ reading ability and interest.
