In recent years, many scholars who study modernity have focused their attention on the special period of the late Qing Dynasty when the old and the new alternated. In addition to the novels of the late Qing Dynasty, the newspapers and periodicals of the late Qing Dynasty are also one of the important materials for studying modernity. On the basis of previous studies, this paper uses the method of text analysis.from the aspect of the daily life, culture and education,to reveal the impact of Western civilization on all aspects of Chinese society in the late Qing Dynasty by digging out the details in newspapers, and to show the experience of modernity of novelty, anxiety, acceptance and fear when Chinese faced the conflict between new and old civilizations. The so-called experience of modernity is the Chinese people's direct recognition of their position or survival value in the modern global world in the late Qing Dynasty.Based on newspapers and periodicals, this paper will examine the experience of modernity between 1895 and 1911(from Sino Japanese War of 1894 to the establishment of the Republic of China). The text of the article is divided into three parts. The first part mainly analyses the complex mentality of the Chinese people in the late Qing Dynasty in the face of the introduction of Western goods and customs;the second part discusses the disputes between the old and the new cultures under the impact of modernity;and the third part analyses the different attitudes of the Chinese people in the late Qing Dynasty towards the educational reform under the influence of western educational concepts. We can deepen our understanding of the transformation and development of China's modernity by investigating the three aspects of glad experience, repulsive experience and a complex experience between the two.
