A Report Of E-C Translation Of Becoming A Technical Writer Based On Newmark’s Text Typology

Benefiting from the development of society,economy,and technology,the language service industry has expanded unprecedentedly in recent years,surpassing the traditional translation industry.China Language Service Industry Market Research and Development Trends Report 2015-2022 revealed that behind translation and interpreting,technical writing has become the third major demand in China’s language service market.Currently,China’s national development needs and measures such as “the Belt and Road Initiative” and “Made in China 2025” encourage its enterprises to go global,which requires technical writing and technical communication to introduce its products to foreign countries and further enhance the competitiveness of national enterprises.However,the development of technical writing in China is still in the early stage.Becoming a Technical Writer,published by Fudan University Press in November 2020,introduces technical writing and technical communication for Chinese readers.It discusses technical writing history and trends,articulates skillsets of technical writers,and provides professional resources.The author was commissioned to translate it from English to Chinese.Based on Newmark’s Text Typology,this translation report takes the E-C translation of Becoming a Technical Writer as the case to study translation methods and skills.Chapter 1 introduces the background and significance of the translation project,as well as the book content;Chapter 2 introduces the theoretical basis and presents the literature review;Chapter 3 analyzes text features from the lexical,syntactic and discourse levels.The source text employs a large number of technical terms,personal pronouns,long sentences and adverbial clauses,and it features the informative-text style and double contexts;Chapter 4 is a case study.Based on features in chapter 3,the author analyzes and summarizes translation methods and skills: literal translation,omission,division,restructuring,retention of rhetorical devices,and cultural back-translation;Chapter 5 summarizes this translation project,and presents major findings and suggestions for translation of similar texts.
