The “Text-Behavior-Society” criticism system of Translator Behavior Criticism(TBC)demonstrates a scientific and systematic way of research.Based on TBC,this study examines Helen Wang’s behavior from the “Behavior-Text Perspective” and“Behavior-Society Perspective” through quantitative and qualitative research through self-built parallel corpora of Helen Wang’s English translations of Cao Wenxuan’s Qing Tong Kui Hua,Qing Ting Yan,and Shen Shixi’s Hong Chai. The questions this thesis seeks to address are as follows. What are the features of Helen Wang’s behavior in the “Behavior-Text Perspective”? What are the features of Helen Wang’s behavior in the “Behavior-Society Perspective”? What are the general and unique features of Helen Wang’s behavior as a translator when translating different authors’ works? And what are the reasons?“Behavior-Text Perspective” gives consideration to behavioral research and textural evaluation by describing the traces of Helen Wang’s behavior reflected in the text in terms of vocabulary, syntax, rhetoric, graphology and culture. It is found that Helen Wang’s language is more complex compared to the linguistic features of children’s literature works in English. In terms of rhetoric, graphology and culture,it is generally “seeking truth to the ST while attaining utility to readers”,which is in line with the general behavioral pattern of “truth-seeking being the basis, but with utility-attaining taking the priority”.“Behavior-Society Perspective” gives consideration to behavioral research and social evaluation by examining the socialization of Helen Wang’s behavior and the social effects. The study finds that Helen Wang changes her role from a spectator to a participant. This study gathers media comments on Helen Wang’s three translations through the Factiva database and readers’ book reviews from Goodreads to create a small corpus.Ant Conc 3.5.9 is used to analyze reader’s book reviews. The study found that Bronze and Sunflower and Dragonfly Eyes received more attention. Both popular and scholarly journals gave Bronze and Sunflower and Dragonfly Eye political interpretations and affirmed the universal values of the works. The poetic language and themes in the ST were generally understood by readers, but multiple interpretations of the characters have been offered due to cultural disparities. The socialization of the translator’s behavior does not necessarily achieve the desired social effects. The production and reception of the translation are also influenced by various aspects such as Chinese imagination and the poetic traditions of China and the West. The study of translators’ behavior criticism in children’s literature should adopt scientific methods. It is of great benefit to the research on the English translation of Chinese children’s literature guided by the theory of Translator Behavior Criticism through the corpus-based method. |
