The text selected for the translation practice is the novel The Sugar Mother written by Australian female writer Elizabeth Jolley.The text was provided by the Australian Research Centre of Mudanjiang Normal University.The novel The Sugar Mother is about the story of Dr.Edwin Page,a middle-aged literature professor,and two women(Leila and her mother)who try to extort Edwin’s money through surrogacy.The translator chooses the exposition of the novel as translation task which describes Edwin’s life at home after his wife went abroad.The main content of this part is Edwin’s psychological description and behavior description.The translator analyzes the translation of psychological analysis,interior monologue,portrait description,conversation description,action description,and scenery description in the novel from two perspectives: direct psychological description and indirect psychological description.The translator chooses appropriate translation strategies to reproduce the emotions of the characters based on the language characteristics of different types of psychological descriptions.Translation strategies include addition,omission,negation,liberal translation,division and inversion,furthermore,the rhetorical devices of reduplication,four-character idioms,parallel sentence,personification,antithesis and exaggeration are also used in translation.In the translation practice,the translator summarizes the translation strategies of psychological description of characters based on analyzing the characteristics of the source text,hoping to provide a reference for the translation research of psychological description in novels.
