Interpreting The Ambiguity Meaning In Watteau’s Works From Commedia Dell’arte

Watteau,a French artist in the 18 th century,started the Rococo style,but his art works do not have the typical characteristics of Rococo art’s indulged pleasure,and there is often no clear meaning in the picture,but always with a vague and ambiguity meaning.As a fanatic of Commedia dell’arte,Watteau has many references to Commedia dell’arte in the form,theme,ideas and other aspects of creation,and "Pierrot" is his favorite character image.Starting from the connection between Watteau and Commedia dell’arte,this paper tries to interpret the real intention behind the ambiguity meaning--the exploration of the combination of art and nature by taking "Pierot" as the breakthrough point.Through the analysis of the form in Watto’s works,this paper finds that this ambiguity meaning is the ideal state of Watto’s "intentional choice and intentional shaping",which aims to make the audience walk out of the illusion presented in the painting and return to the reverying space of personal freedom.Watteau broke the rigid visual and perceptual witness order of classical painting and established a new,self-determined way of viewing.James Elkins,an art historian,believes that Watteau intentionally erased the existence of the original subject,classify his works as "Anti-Subject" paintings,and thus proposed that the traditional research mechanism of art history should be changed to abandon the primordial status of intentionality.For French art,Watteau’s unique artistic style is also significance.Watteau overthrew the sovereignty of painting and brewed the tradition of anti-academy in the academy.It was the first time that France successfully found the means to establish itself in art after getting rid of the Italian model.
