Achieving Style Through Form

Xu Beihong has many artistic practices in his life.Most of the studies on him in the art circle focus on the improvement of his Chinese painting and painting creation,but pay little attention to his calligraphy creation and calligraphy concept.Combing and studying Xu Beihong’s calligraphy thoughts,it is not difficult to find that his thoughts have corresponding internal relations with his teacher Kang Youwei’s calligraphy ideas.He clearly put forward the calligraphy thought that "the beauty of calligraphy lies in virtue and feeling,and the form is used to achieve style",which is not only influenced by Kang Youwei’s "calligraphy as form" thought,but also the practice and development of "calligraphy as form" thought.Xu Beihong’s view of "form" of calligraphy is formed in the modern transformation of Chinese calligraphy,which is the inheritance and development of the traditional view of calligraphy.Starting from "form",this paper studies the origin,content and standard of calligraphy evaluation of his calligraphic thought,which opens a window for us to understand the transformation of calligraphic thought in the 20 th century,provides certain help for us to construct modern calligraphic theory,and also provides reference for us to understand and analyze contemporary calligraphic phenomenon.
