The text for this translation practice report is a selection from chapter eight of Aboriginal Australians—Blacks Responses to White Dominance 1788-2001.Set in the narrative of the cattle industry in the north of Australia,Chapter 8 of this book is about how white European invaders exploited the Aborigines in various aspects during Australia’s colonization and the ways in which the Aborigines responded to the brutal oppression of the whites. The original text is an informative text, with concise, compact, and distinctive features that are of great research value.Peter Newmark’s Communicative Translation Theory is oriented to the target language readers and focuses on the effects produced by the translation.Under the guidance of this theory, the translator analyzed the difficulties encountered in the translation process at the level of words, sentences, and discourse, and formulated corresponding solutions. At the lexical level,by exploring the specific connotations of the characteristic words in the original context, the translator accordingly concluded the conversion, amplification, and free translation to handle such cases;at the sentence level, there are a great number of complex sentences and passive sentences in the source text. For the complex sentences, the translator mainly employed splitting and restructuring techniques. While for the passive sentences, the translator applied the conversion of passive sentences to active sentences,as well as the retention of passive patterns;at the discourse level, the translator carried out paragraph analysis on two cohesion devices, namely conjunction cohesion and reference cohesion.Through a meticulous analysis of the classic cases in the original text, the translator finally drew out relevant lessons to provide a guide for relevant studies.
