| The documentary is an important cultural carrier and medium of communication, and the documentary on "the Belt and Road" have the mission of spreading China’s voice to the world and shaping the image of the "the Belt and Road" cultural community. Then,in the current international communication environment,it is worth exploring how to improve the ability of cross-cultural narratives in documentaries and build a "the Belt and Road" image that is recognized by the world through an appropriate narrative. This thesis takes the micro-documentary Chang’an Meets Rome, which is involved in the construction of the image of "the Belt and Road",as the research object, and adopts textual analysis, comparative research and more research methods, combining cross-cultural communication perspective and narrative perspective, using cross-cultural communication theory, narrative theory and documentary theory, and using Mick Barr’s narrative framework as an analytical tool for its cross-cultural narrative research. The thesis is divided into five parts: Chapter 1 gives an account of the main theories used in this paper;Chapter 2 analyzes the cross-cultural narrative characteristics of the sample documentaries in five dimensions: theme and structure, story and suspense, character and perspective, time and space, and discourse and rhetoric,at the micro level with the help of Mick Barr’s narrative framework;Chapter3 is a summary of the cross-cultural narrative strategies of the sample documentaries at the macro level in terms of narrative content, narrative form and narrative behavior;Chapter 4 analyzes what values the sample documentaries export in the cross-cultural narrative and how they export these values,so as to test the effectiveness of their cross-cultural narrative strategies and lay the foundation for the following discussion on the shortcomings of the cross-cultural narrative;Chapter 5 examines the shortcomings of the sample documentaries in cross-cultural narratives in terms of narrative techniques and values output, and gives corresponding suggestions. The author’s research reveals that the sample documentaries have many worthwhile cross-cultural narrative strategies: to achieve cultural commonality by selecting topics that can reduce the influence of cultural discounts;to highlight common cultural connections by selecting content with an international perspective;to promote mutual transformation between cultures by coding in a way that blends high and low contexts. The narrative form, such as the symbolic reasoning of historical themes,is easy to be understood by multicultural audiences,so as to unify cultural diversity in a coherent whole and achieve synergy in cultural meaning;the two culturally adaptive narrative behaviors of guidance and discovery are used to gain the approval and favor of audiences in different cultural contexts. However, the documentary also has some problems in terms of narrative approach and value output, which should be taken seriously. Therefore, through studying the cross-cultural narratives of the sample documentaries, the author aims to provide some reference for the improvement of the cross-cultural communication effect of the documentaries on "the Belt and Road". |
