Looking through the history of art since the mid-to-late twentieth century,it is not difficult to find that many of them have used repetitive acts to create paintings, such as Jackson Pollock,Se Tombre,Agnes Martin,Yayoi Kusama,Li Huasheng,Lee Ufan,Wang Guangle,Liang Quan, etc. This article will take the artist Lee Ufan as an example,by combing his artistic context, analyzing the repetitive phenomena and characteristics of repetition in his paintings, and studying the art theory he proposed to summarize the internal concept of his repetitive behavior and explore the value and significance of his repetitive behavior. This paper is divided into six chapters, the first chapter is an introduction, which describes the current situation of domestic and foreign research on this topic, the value and significance of research, and the research methods. The second chapter deals with the origins of action painting, repetition in action painting, and the evolution of repetition in painting after action painting.Action painting originated in the United States in the 1950 s,and artists regarded the performance of painting as the purpose of art,the representative artist is Pollock. With the development of action painting, the repetitiveness of behavior became apparent, resulting in "post-abstract" painting, minimalist painting, and abstract painting from 1970 onwards in East Asia.In the third chapter,Lee Ufan’s life experience and his artistic practice are mainly described.Lee Ufan’s artistic practice is mainly divided into two ways: ready-made installation art and monochrome flat painting. His monochromatic paintings embody a strong repetitive character. In the fourth chapter, the repetitiveness of Lee Ufan’s painting practice is mainly analyzed.First of all,it expounds the repetition phenomenon in his painting works: the repetition of points, lines and surfaces;then, analyzes the characteristics of repetition in Lee Ufan’s paintings: individual differences, visual balance, and infinity of time and space;finally, summarizes the artistic concepts behind Lee Ufan’s repetitive behavior:first,it reflects on minimalist painting, opposes mechanical, undifferentiated, and emotionless repetition, and advocates the difference and unknown of repetition;the second is to "seek encounter" and pursue the infinity of time and space in painting.Strive to meet the existence of objects beyond the external objectivity of the object. In the fifth chapter,I mainly expound the influence of Lee Ufan’s painting practice on my personal creation.I will divide my creative process into three stages: the first appearance of repetitive behavior, repetition and superposition, and the evolution of repetition. The sixth chapter concludes that Lee Ufan’s repetition differs from the repetition in Abstract Expressionist and Minimalist paintings, first, his repetition is the one that pursuit of difference. He limits as much as possible the way and subject matter of the work, and in the pure material and production process,he carries out rigorous behavior with a disciplined body, the purpose of which is to show the difference brought about by the unknown "other" in the creation, which is the existence of the object that beyond the objectivity.Second, his repetition is the kind of infiniteness.Lee Ufan uses the cyclic points and lines to correspond to the infinity of the universe, and uses the "residual white" that appears in the process of repetition to connect the infinity of space. This is the value and meaning of "repetition" in Lee Ufan’s paintings.
