A Study On The Style Evolution Of Euan Uglow’s Works

Euan Uglow is widely regarded as one of the great masters of the art of contemporary British painting after Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud.In the era of change in western painting,all kinds of artistic ideological trends appeared one after another,as a result,the traditional painting was constantly being impacted.Under such historical background,Uglow insists on using his own unique painting way and visual language for artistic creation.From Uglow’s paintings,we can clearly see the style characteristics of his artistic creation.Uglow boycotted the imposed literal interpretation for his works because he thought his works themselves were an expression of the language.Because the material of him when he was interviewed was limited before his death,people could hardly completely understand his works,which leads to fewer domestic and foreign studies of Euan Uglow.Therefore,the study of Uglow is mostly about the analysis of the picture color,the composition of a picture,and the technique of his works.After constantly looking up various kinds of material,I found that few existing materials analyzed the evolution process of Uglow’s artistic works styles in the order of time.The evolution and formation of the characteristics of an artist’s painting style are closely related to his social background,mentoring relationship,and personal concerns,which has also become one of the reasons for me to study Uglow.After World War Two,the social situation had different degrees of influence on various fields,including art.Analysis of the images alone is not enough to reflect the artist’s social impact value.Only the systematic analysis of the cause of the artistic characteristics of the artist and the artist’s character can better help us to read the works and rethink.This paper is divided into four chapters,the introduction part summarizes and analyzes the purpose and significance of this research,research methods,and research status at home and abroad.The first chapter analyzes the reason for the formation of the style of the works of Uglow from two aspects including the social background of Euan Uglow and his personal growth experience;The main form of the second chapter is works analysis.The picture style trend and time order are for reference.The setting of a turning point in the style is in accordance with the key works.On the whole,it is divided into three periods.By analyzing with examples and comparing the works of Uglow in different periods,the process of the evolution of his artistic style is clear.Uglow’s thinking about artistic creation and exploration of life by drawing is also clear;The third chapter introduces the influence of Uglow on figurative expressionism painting in China as well as several artists who had direct contact with Uglow and are from the China Academy of Art.The fourth chapter expounds on the influence of Ewan Uglow on my creation as well as my exploration of painting and thinking about its practical significance separately from my works’ subject selection and conception,the expression method.
