A Search Of Linear Expression Of Euan Uglow’s Work

Euan Uglow(1917-2000)is an English painter of the 20 th century.He is noted for his rigorous and solemn style of painting.His works include a large number of figure paintings of female nudes,as well as several still life paintings and a small number of landscape paintings.His paintings are clean and concise,with precise figures and delicate brushwork.Throughout his career,linear element is an important part of his early and late paintings.In this paper,linear elements are defined as contour lines and measurement line traces.The main content of this paper includes five chapters.The first chapter introduces the research background,purpose,status,methods,and innovation points.The second chapter focuses on the formation process of Uglow’s painting style and the important influence of William Coldstream,Cezanne,Piero,and others on the formation of his style,especially the linear expression.The third chapter analyzes the role and significance of linear elements in his paintings through the analysis of his specific paintings.The fourth chapter describes the influence of Uglow’s paintings on the creation of the Fleeting Time series,from the perspectives of the selection of characters and objects,the appropriate weakening of the background,the emphasis on the outline of objects,and the enhancement of block surface expression.The conclusion reviews the important transformation of Uglow’s whole painting career and the perception and summary obtained in the creation of Fleeting Time series.
