Narrative is not only a way of telling a story, but also a psychological need for survival.Narrative is closely dependent on the individual experiences of the narrator or writer, and it resonates with the presence and emotions of the listener or reader, thus making narrative an ethics.Modern novels emerged with a focus on individual experiences in modernity, and therefore the core of narrative in novels is closely related to ethical issues of storytelling.Narrative ethics in novels involve the exploration of individual existence and the sense of life.Because of this, the study of novels cannot bypass the narrative ethics of novels. This article explores the narrative ethics in contemporary Tibetan novels from a theoretical perspective. The literary ecosystem of contemporary Tibetan novels is to some extent influenced by contemporary Chinese literature. Therefore, this article also examines the narrative ethics of Tibetan contemporary novels within the context of a comparative study between Chinese and Tibetan contemporary literature. In the first chapter, the relationship between the literary form, modernity, and narrative ethics in novels is examined to establish the theoretical framework of this article.By comparing the categories of narrative ethics in contemporary Chinese novels, the basic types of narrative ethics in contemporary Tibetan novels are identified. It is pointed out that the narrative ethics in contemporary Tibetan novels can be classified into three types. In the second chapter, the article examines the practice tradition of the grand narrative of people’s ethics in Chinese novels and explores the grand narratives of people’s ethics, collective ethics, and normative ethics presented in early 1980 s contemporary Tibetan novels.Although this literary practice primarily focused on the early 1980 s,it is indeed a significant presence that cannot be overlooked in the literary history. In the third chapter, the grand narrative of elite ethics in contemporary Tibetan novels is analyzed. After identifying the concept of elite ethics,it is argued that it can be summarized into two aspects: the pursuit of modernity and the reflection on modernity. The values pursued and various themes in the novels of the 1980 s and 1990 s can be compared with late Qing time novels and May Fourth literature. While the acceptance of aesthetics represented by social novels is reasonably recognized within its historical context, criticism is raised regarding the absence of individual experiences and voices. The emergence of reflection on modernity is associated with the cultural background of the 1990 s,identifying the pursuit of the grand narrative of aesthetic modernity in literature consumption and the depiction of "great figures," while pointing out the lack of complex spiritual criticism. In the fourth chapter, the novels of avant-garde writers Jongpu and Panma Tseten are explored in contemporary Tibetan literature.A comparison is made with avant-garde novels in the Chinese literary scene of the late 1980 s.It is pointed out that the novels of Jongpu and Panma Tseten hold significant deconstructive significance for contemporary Tibetan literature and embody a narrative exploration of individual ethics.
