The period from the 1930s to 1940s witnessed the rise of masters and famous artists in great numbers in the world of seal cutting.Qiao Dazhuang,a seal cutting artist of the Yishan School born in this period,initially absorbed extensively from the works of famous artists of the previous generations,such as the Anhui School and the Zhejiang School,and then drew on the works of Huang Mufu,a seal cutting master of the late Qing Dynasty,and gradually formed his own style by making constant breakthroughs.Qiao’s style of seal cutting is unique and original in terms of composition and cutting style,and the artistic effect achieved is unique,which differs from that of the ancients as well as the sages of the time,thereby building a unique "Qiao’s Seal Cutting Paradigm".The uniqueness of Qiao Dazhuang’s seal cutting style lies in his subjective treatment of ancient scripts of various periods,making the characters and composition,blocks and lines echo each other through exaggerated strokes,stretching and shifting,and interspersing and moving.The change in Qiao Dazhuang’s seal cutting style has not only broken the previous concept of seal cutting that prioritizes the calligraphy,but also enriched the cutting face.The intertwining of lines and blocks in his cutting style,"in and out",brings a sense of beauty and vitality to the harmonious and unified cutting face.Mr.Qiao Dazhuang’s achievements in seal cutting are mainly reflected in the ancient seal cutting style,and his composition is deeply rooted in the essence of the ancient seals of the Warring States period,while integrating the ancient scripts of various periods,advancing his seal cutting works to a higher artistic level.Based on the previous studies,this paper intends to explore the use of pre-Qin scripts in Qiao Dazhuang’s ancient seal cutting works and the treatment of seal cutting by using the methods of illustration analysis,comparison analysis and literature review,focusing on the following three aspects: first,the combing and analysis of his seal script works.Firstly,it is an analysis of his seal cutting style,which has been a constant concept in seal cutting art in China since ancient times,and the treatment of calligrahy in his seals is interpreted through the characteristics of seal script in his seal script,which is also influenced by seal cutting,forming the artistic characteristic of "combining calligraphy and seal".Finally,the treatment of ancient characters in his ancient seals is discussed,as well as the relationship between calligraphy style,composition style,knife style,cutting face shape,and content,in order to further understand and appreciate the interest of calligraphy style in Qiao Dazhuang’s seals.In the author’s opinion,Mr.Qiao Dazhuang’s mastery and skillful use of ancient scripts and his new language of seal cutting are the cornerstones of his place in the history of seal cutting,and also provide a new reference for future generations to learn the art of seal cutting.They all benefited a lot from Qiao’s art works.In the end,this paper shows my knowledge of Qiao Dazhuang’s seal cutting art and my mastery of the techniques of his works in the postgraduate stage,in conjunction with my own creation.Through this writing at the same time,the author gets to know Qiao Dazhuang’s cutting style more deeply,explores his unique artistic charm,and feels his sincere love for seal cutting art,thereby providing experience and inspiration for his own future creation.
