Completed in the 28th year of the Reign of Emperor Qianlong(1763),the Imperial Literary Records of the Western Regions is an etymological dictionary with the core of place names and personal names in various languages of the Western regions.Under the directions of the Reign of Emperor Qianlong, was presided over by Fu Heng with the participation of other auxiliary staff. It specifically covers the names of places, mountains and rivers in Xinjiang,Qinghai and Tibet,as well as the main names of the Junggar and Uyghur ministries. The dictionary is a precious reference book for people to know and understand Xinjiang and other places, and study ethnic languages and characters. It is also an indispensable document for people to study Xinjiang and other local history, language, region and culture in the early Qing Dynasty. At present, the academic researches on the Imperial Literary Records of the Western Regions mainly focus on language and phonetics, and most of them are introductory. There are only more than ten relevant works and papers, and the place names and personal names involved in the dictionary have not been sorted out in detail. The etymology and semantics of some place names in the dictionary are not strictly researched. The linguistic analysis of some place names is not comprehensive.Based on this, the author will sort out the toponyms of the first six volumes involved in the Imperial Literary Records of the Western Regions in detail, and give my own opinions on some toponyms whose etymology and semantics needed further analysis,so as to make a comprehensive, systematic and correct response to the general situation of Xinjiang’s language, history, geography and culture in a more real and comprehensive way. This paper is divided into three parts. The first part is the introduction, which mainly elaborates the purpose and significance of the topic and the research status at home and abroad, and sketch out the research methods of this paper. The second part is sorting out place name, including two sections. The first section mainly sorts out the place names of Xinjiang in detail according to the arrangement order in the dictionary. There are 24 volumes in three volumes, and the place names of Xinjiang are only involved in the six volumes. Therefore, only sorts out the contents of the first six volume including the repeated place names in the dictionary. The second section,on the basis of the first section, mainly classifies the listed place names according to the etymology of the dictionary, including the single language place names and the compound language place names. The single language place names can be divided into Uygur place names,Chinese place names,Mongolian place names,Kazakh place names,Persian place names.Compound language place names include Uyghur--Chinese place names,Uyghur--Mongolian place names, and Chinese--Mongolian place names. The third part is the study of place names, focusing on the Uygur place names in the dictionary, including three chapters, namely the second, third and fourth chapters. The second chapter mainly analyzes the linguistic features of place names, including the forms of place names, the grammatical knowledge embodied in place names. The third chapter mainly analyzes the cultural connotation embodied in place names, starting with the naming of place names with general names and special names, and analyzes the culture behind place names. The fourth chapter mainly discusses several problems. The semantics of some place names in the dictionary are obviously wrong and the etymology can not withstand the examination.Based on this, the author puts forward some of her own views and opinions.
