Zhang Taiyan,a native of Yuhang,Zhejiang Province, was called "a learned revolutionary" by Lu Xun.His study of Guanzi follows the lineage of "seeking wealth and power" since the Western School,Yan Fu and Liang Qichao, and has distinctive stage characteristics. In the first stage,Zhang Taiyan focused on the examination and exegesis of Guanzi during the period of the Exegetical Seminary, and explored the content of Western techniques contained in Guanzi’s book. When his political stance changed from "redeeming the Qing Dynasty" to "opposing the Qing Dynasty",the study of "Guanzi-Luxury" was not applicable to his political purpose,so in the revised edition of the book,Zhang Taiyan deleted this chapter. In the revised version of the book,Zhang Taiyan deleted this chapter. In the second stage,Zhang Taiyan first used the form of examination and exegesis to explore the political, moral, and national thoughts contained in Guanzi’s book.By 1910,under the stimulus of social reality and personal situation,Zhang’s academic proposition changed and regarded "Tao" as the core of his scholarship. At this time, the book Guanzi was criticized by Zhang for being derived from Yi Yin and Taigong, and for being inconsistent with the ideology of the Way,and was judged by Zhang Taiyan as "its Way is theft. In the third stage,Zhang Taiyan did not have a special study of Guanzi, but only some scattered comments, and in his later years, when the Japanese army invaded the country,he began to put special emphasis on Guanzhong.Looking back at Zhang Taiyan’s study of Guanzi, his focus has always shifted between academics and politics, and this is a microcosm of his identity as a "learned revolutionary".
