A Study On The Improvisation Thinking And Techniques Of Saxophone In Jazz Odd Meters Compositions

This thesis is based on jazz saxophone performance,with the improvisation of two five-beat odd meters compositions by the famous alto saxophonist Paul Desmond and the modern pioneer jazz saxophonist Mark Tuner as the main examples.This study focuses on the improvisation thinking and techniques of saxophone in various odd meters jazz works,hoping to help more musicians who have not been exposed to odd meters jazz compositions to grasp the improvisation thinking and techniques of related works more quickly with a relatively simple understanding way.The first chapter of this paper will first introduce the function of saxophone in jazz bands and the basic playing techniques in traditional jazz,and then introduce the birth of odd meters jazz.Take "Take Five",the representative work of jazz with odd meters,as an example to analyze the types and characteristics of early five odd-meters composition.The second chapter will start with the thinking logic of odd meters improvisation and explore the simple and practical odd meters improvisation from three perspectives.The third chapter will study from the technical level,through the use of notes and rhythm two aspects of improvisation techniques applicable to saxophone in odd meters compositions.The last chapter will look at the development of odd meters music at China and abroad and look forward to the future research on this topic.
