A Comparative Study On The Application Of Integrated And Isolated Form-Focused Instruction To English Grammar Teaching In Junior High School

Grammar is an important part of language learning,but grammar teaching has always been controversial in language teaching.How to carry out more effective grammar teaching has always been the focus of attention for English teachers and scholars.Form-Focused Instruction came into being,it aims at striking a balance between “form-centered”and“meaning-centered” teaching.Later,many scholars have done a lot of theoretical research on this,and classified form-focused instruction at the same time.This study divided form-focused instruction into integrated FFI and isolated FFI,and further explored the influence of these two instructions on English grammar teaching in junior high schools.In this study,two parallel classes of Grade One in a middle school in Shantou City,Guangdong Province were selected as experimental objects.Through pre-test,teaching experiment,immediate post-test,delayed post-test,questionnaire and interview,the grammar teaching content was simple past tense,and the teaching experiment was carried out for 4 weeks.This study mainly includes the following two questions:(1)What is the learning effect of integrated FFI and isolated FFI on junior high school students’ mastery of the simple past tense? What is the difference between immediate learning effect and delayed learning effect?(2)What are the attitudes of junior high school students towards integrated FFI and isolated FFI?After the teaching experiment,this study draws the following conclusions:(1)Integrated FFI and isolated FFI can promote junior high school students’ mastery of the simple past tense.(2)Isolated FFI is better than integrated FFI in English grammar teaching in junior high school in terms of immediate learning effect and delayed learning effect.(3)In grammar teaching,junior high school students are more inclined to isolated FFI.
