As the leader of American independent film,Coen brothers achieved both artistic and commercial success.The unique style of his films have been highly praised by scholars and professionals in film industry around the world.In the postmodernism context,the Coen brothers walked along the fine line in between independent and commercial film fields,and created films with the integration of author’s film gener and black film gener.This thesis will focus on Coens’ theme,script,character design,and motion picture language research about their 19 films,and explore the underlying logic of the creation from the aspects of story telling,gener input,and motion picture language creation,etc.The first part is preface.In this chapter,I will include the self experiences,culture background,and significance of his films,overseas and domestic research status,content and methods of research,and point out the shortcomings of the past research about the Coen brothers.The first chapter is the introduction.In this chapter,I will introduce the growth of the Coen brothers and the films they created in the past 40 years.On this basis,I will summarize the unique “Coens’ style label” of the Coen brothers,which is bases of the following chapters.The second chapter is about the themes.In this part,I will apply the interview data,the method of “knowing people and discussing the works”;I will review all their films and their religious experiences in childhood;I will try to discover the deepest theme of the Coen brothers’ works,and present the latest views based on previous scholars’ research as well.The third chapter is about the story telling,In this part,I will explore the concept of “contradiction” into their own film practice through the analyzation of their post-modern trend grown up circumstances,and eventually I will discuss the unique of their works,which elements were “intertextuality” and “misappropriation”.The fourth chapter is about the characters design.As we know,Coen brothers have been compensating the film for their dull childhood.From this aspect,I will represent Coen brothers’ portrait of the female images,anti-hero images and subcultural roles in their films.The fifth chapter is about the motion picture language which are properly fit in the scripts.In this part,I will analyze the lighting style,composition logic and editing style in their works and explore how they use motion picture language to respond to their “Coens’ style label” according to their scripts.The last part is about the conclusion.In this part,I will make a brief summary of the above,and give some suggestions to the future Chinese independent film makers.
