| Economic integration is a significant characteristic of the development of contemporary international society.Cultures of different countries have gradually exceeded the boundaries between nations and regions through various means of communication.English has become a means of cross-cultural communication among communicators.At the same time,the English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2022)put the cultivation of learners’ cultural consciousness in the second place of the curriculum objectives,emphasizing the importance of imparting cultural knowledge and cultivating cultural awareness,and highlighting the necessity of cultural teaching.As the executor of cultural teaching,teachers’ cultural teaching beliefs directly affect classroom teaching.Therefore,it is very necessary to analyze teachers’ cultural teaching beliefs in classroom teaching.In this study,classroom observation,questionnaire survey,and interview methods were adopted to understand and analyze the status quo of the cognition and application of the cultural teaching beliefs about English teachers in elementary school in S district,and to analysis the affecting factors behind the status quo.By referring to the literature related to cultural teaching and teaching beliefs,this study constructs the beliefs related to five indicators,including teachers’ teaching objectives,teachers’ cultural teaching objectives,teachers’ cultural teaching content objectives,teachers’ cultural teaching activities,teachers’ cultural teaching abilities and attitudes,and release a questionnaire survey among 105 English teachers in elementary school.By observing 20 classes of actual teaching of 4 teachers and conducting interviews with them.According to the research results of the study,the following conclusions are as follows:(1)Elementary school English teachers in District S have a clear cognition of their own cultural teaching beliefs,but there is a deviation between the cognition of cultural teaching objective beliefs and curriculum standards.In terms of cultural teaching content beliefs,they mainly provide cultural information,and in terms of cultural teaching activities,they mainly rely on teacher-led professors.(2)The application of cultural teaching beliefs of primary school English teachers in classroom teaching is not ideal,which is manifested in that teachers focus on language capacity in the design of teaching goals in actual classroom teaching,and they pay less attention to cultural awareness;The teaching content is mainly language knowledge,light cultural knowledge;Teaching activities are organized around public courses and normal teaching is ignored.(3)Teachers’ cultural teaching beliefs have a guiding effect on classroom teaching,and directly affect teachers’ decision-making on classroom teaching.The degree of influence is still different among individual teachers.The influence of teachers’ cultural teaching beliefs on classroom teaching is mainly divided into five aspects: traditional teaching ideas are deeply rooted,English teaching materials are scarce,cultural teaching and training are mere formalities,teachers’ tasks are trivial and complex,and teachers’ awareness of self-improvement is weak.To sum up,this research brings forward lots of advice for promoting the professional evolution of English teachers in cultural teaching: to reinforce the evolution of cultural teaching resources and enrich the details of cultural teaching resources,and to conserve the source of cultural teaching beliefs;Improve the cultural education and training system with pre-service training and in-service training as the entry point,and promote the development of cultural teaching beliefs;Focusing on teachers’ self-development consciousness and implementing the application of cultural teaching beliefs in classroom teaching. |
