A Report On The Post-Editing For The Machine Translation Of Family-School Partnerships During The Early School Years(Excerpts)

Due to the characteristics of high efficiency and low cost,machine translation platforms are increasingly used in the translation practice of language services.However,at present,the majority of machine translation platforms are not sufficient to meet customer requirements.Post-editing can effectively correct the errors of machine translation.In view of this,the author translated the first three chapters of Family-School Partnerships During the Early School Years in the “machine translation + post-editing” mode.The text is an academic text with certain professionalism,with complex and changeable sentence patterns and many long and difficult sentences.In the process of translation practice,Youdao translation platform is first used to translate the source text from English to Chinese,and then post-editing is carried out to make the translation lexically precise,smoothly expressed and logically reasonable.This report focuses on three levels to analyze the typical problems of machine translation and discuss the corresponding post-editing strategies.In this translation practice,the machine translation mainly has such problems as wrong choice of word meaning,literal translation of words,mistranslation of proper nouns,and mistranslation of abbreviations at lexical level;such problems as unnecessary sentence splitting,complex sentences without splitting,error of sentence breaking,restricted by the word order of the original text,and restricted by the form of the original text at syntactic level;and such problems as failure to combine with the context and lack of coherence at discourse level.Correspondingly,at lexical level,such strategies as choice of the meaning according to the context,literal translation of words,verification of proper nouns,and adjustment of abbreviations are adopted;at syntactic level,such strategies as merging of sentences,splitting of sentences,breaking of sentences,adjustment of word order,and literal translation of sentences are adopted;and at discourse level,such strategies as combining with the context and strengthening coherence are adopted.In this report,there still exist some shortcomings.In the process of post-editing,the author performs editing based on the machine translation,so it is inevitable to be bound by the machine translation.In general,the author hopes to provide a reference for other scholars who study the“machine translation + post-editing” model through her own practical experience.
